Veterinary preventive medicine covers everything we do to keep your pet healthy throughout its life: vaccinations, deworming, regular check-ups and health monitoring tailored to each stage. At our clinic in Gràcia, Barcelona, we apply this preventive approach from day one.
At Rovira Veterinary Clinic, every preventive medicine plan in Barcelona is designed directly by one of our specialists — Lídia Adell, with specific training in feline medicine, or Andrea Aldea, specialist in nutrition and dermatology — so the protocol truly fits your animal, its species, age and lifestyle.
There is no need to wait for your pet to show symptoms. Many diseases progress without visible signs for months. The earlier we detect a change, the easier and less costly it is to address.

When does your pet need a preventive check-up?
Stage 1
Puppies & kittens
The first weeks are critical. We establish the full vaccination schedule, deworm and carry out a general health check to get things off to the best start.
Stage 2
Healthy adults
An annual vet check allows us to detect subtle changes before they become serious problems. We update vaccinations and run blood tests if needed.
Stage 3
Senior pets
From age 7 we recommend visits every 6 months. Frequent check-ups make a real difference to quality and length of life.

What people ask us most
How often should I bring my pet for a preventive check-up?
It depends on age. Puppies and kittens need several visits during their first year to complete the vaccination schedule. Healthy adults should come at least once a year. Senior pets (over 7 years) benefit from check-ups every 6 months.
What vaccinations does my dog need in Barcelona?
In Catalonia, rabies vaccination is not legally required, though it is essential for travelling outside Spain with your dog. The leishmaniasis vaccine is highly recommended in Barcelona, as it is an endemic area. We also include vaccines against distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis and leptospirosis. The exact protocol depends on your dog's lifestyle and age.
What about cat vaccinations?
For cats we recommend the trivalent vaccine (rhinotracheitis, calicivirus and panleukopenia) and, if the cat goes outdoors or lives with other cats, the feline leukaemia vaccine.
Is internal and external deworming really necessary?
Yes. Internal parasites such as roundworms or giardia can cause digestive problems and weaken the immune system. External parasites (fleas, ticks) transmit serious diseases. How often depends on lifestyle — pets with outdoor access need more frequent treatment.
