What it is
What your pet eats is their first medicine
Nutrition is one of the fundamental pillars of animal health — and one of the most undervalued. A well-formulated diet can prevent disease, improve skin and coat condition, control weight and support the treatment of chronic conditions.
At Rovira Veterinary Clinic, Dr. Andrea Aldea offers nutrition consultations that are specific and independent from clinical visits, to design a dietary plan tailored to each animal: its species, age, health status and lifestyle.
Dr. Andrea Aldea · Dermatology & Nutrition Specialist
Specialisation in Natural Nutrition with a holistic approach. She has worked in veterinary hospitals and wildlife sanctuaries in Costa Rica, where she developed a personalised approach to animal feeding.
What we offer
Three areas of the nutrition consultation
Natural feeding
Natural nutrition & BARF
Design of raw, cooked or mixed diets correctly formulated to meet all nutritional requirements. No guesswork — every diet includes quantities, proportions and supplementation where needed.
Weight management
Weight control & obesity
Excess weight is the most common condition in pets and has a direct impact on life expectancy. We design progressive, realistic weight-loss plans adapted to the animal and the owner.
Nutrition & disease
Therapeutic diets
Feeding adapted to conditions such as chronic renal failure, diabetes, inflammatory bowel disease, hepatopathies or food allergies. Diet as an active part of treatment.
Myths & facts
What people say and what's actually true
"A good-brand dry food is enough"
Not all pet foods meet every animal's needs equally. Age, size, activity level and existing conditions all change requirements, and no general pet food can adapt to every case.
"If my pet eats well, it doesn't need a nutrition consultation"
Many chronic diseases such as renal failure, obesity or inflammatory bowel disease improve significantly with an adapted diet. Nutrition is not just for sick animals.
"Bones are dangerous for dogs"
Raw, meaty bones of the right size are part of a safe natural diet. The real risk comes from cooked bones, which lose elasticity and splinter. The type of bone matters.
"Natural feeding is dangerous"
A natural diet correctly formulated by a specialist is safe and beneficial for many pets. The problem is not the type of diet but doing it without veterinary guidance or nutritional balancing.
How we work
A nutrition consultation is not a generic recommendation
We don't hand out lists of allowed and forbidden foods from the internet. We assess your pet specifically — its history, physical condition and pathologies — and design a plan that also takes your situation as an owner into account: time, budget and access to ingredients.
Every nutritional plan includes quantities, frequency, supplementation where appropriate and transition recommendations. And we follow up to adjust it if needed.
- 1 Nutritional history: what they eat, how much and how often
- 2 Body condition and ideal weight assessment
- 3 Review of clinical history and current conditions
- 4 Diet design: type, ingredients, quantities and supplementation
- 5 Detailed written nutritional plan provided
- 6 Follow-up at 4–6 weeks to assess progress
Frequently asked questions
What people ask us most about nutrition
Is the nutrition consultation separate from a clinical consultation?
Yes. The nutrition consultation with Dr. Andrea Aldea is a dedicated visit focused exclusively on feeding. It is not a quick add-on at the end of a clinical visit — it has its own time for a complete nutritional history and the design of a personalised plan.
Can I start natural feeding without professional advice?
Technically yes, but it is not recommended. A poorly formulated natural diet can cause nutritional deficiencies, excesses of certain minerals or a calcium-phosphorus imbalance with serious long-term consequences. Professional guidance ensures the transition is safe.
How long does it take to see a difference with a new diet?
It depends on the goal. Improvements in skin and coat are usually noticeable within 4–8 weeks. Weight loss requires consistency and monthly follow-up. In chronic conditions, the impact of diet may show up in blood tests after 2–3 months of correct adherence.
What is the difference between natural nutrition and BARF?
BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food) is a specific type of raw feeding based on meat, raw meaty bones, offal and vegetables. Natural nutrition is a broader concept that also includes cooked or mixed diets. Both can be valid options depending on the animal, the owner and the clinical context.
